The scenarios are far-fetched. The men get most of the funny lines — save for Judy Davis,
who plays, not coincidentally, a psychiatrist who is Allen's wife. And
none of the other characters bear much resemblance to real human beings.
Still, Allen's themes are moderately involving.
To Rome With Love
is a sporadically funny, old-school Allen romp that features four
interwoven tales: an operatic mortician who can only sing in the shower;
an ordinary man who becomes famous overnight; a provincial young
married couple almost forced to be unfaithful; and youthful sufferers of
Ozymandias melancholia, a condition (depression over the realization
that nothing is permanent) coined by Allen in a previous film.
It's neither one of Allen's best, nor among his worst. It is also not likely to win audiences over with the passion that Midnight in Paris did.
This
Roman fable feels familiar, slight and not very inventive, much like
its title. But that's not to say it's not enjoyable. A few performances
are undeniably funny: Alec Baldwin's turn as John, a successful American
architect reliving a key period in his youth; Jesse Eisenberg as John's
youthful, neurotic, alter ego; and Roberto Benigni as an ordinary guy
who inexplicably becomes the Italian male version of Kim Kardashian for a day or two.
To Rome With Love is neither as captivating as Vicky Christina Barcelona or as enthralling as the time-traveling parts of Midnight in Paris.
It's often frivolous and banal, though never tedious. It does offer
moments of buoyant humor, farcical fun and consistently gorgeous
cinematography.
The story is as light as
sorbetto, but the ancient city of Rome is such an enchantingly luminous
place that it's hard not fall under the movie's spell and indulge in
some picturesque escapism.
